Activities
At Abingdon RDA, you can get involved in a variety of meaningful activities that support people with disabilities. Every experience is designed to make a positive impact.

Therapeutic riding
Therapeutic riding offers a range of physical and psychological benefits supported by extensive research. The three-dimensional movement of a horse's back simulates human gait, providing riders with a normal sensorimotor experience that enhances coordination, balance, and posture. Studies have shown improvements in joint mobility, muscle elasticity, and strength, as well as alleviation of pain and sleep disturbances.
Beyond physical benefits, therapeutic riding fosters significant psychosocial development, including increased motivation, self-esteem, and social interaction.

Groundwork
Groundwork sessions at Abingdon RDA involve building trust and communication between participants and horses through activities like leading, grooming, and basic handling. These sessions help individuals develop confidence, coordination, and a deeper connection with the horses.
By working alongside skilled volunteers, participants can experience the therapeutic benefits of interacting with these gentle animals in a supportive environment.

Activity FAQs
The support from volunteers is critical to our success. These are a few questions we have been asked and thought it would be useful to share with you.
When & where are the riding lessons held?
Abingdon Riding for the Disabled is located at Lower Lodge Riding Centre, Southmoor, OX13 5HW. To find out which sessions currently require more volunteers, please contact us through our website.
What do I actually do as a volunteer helper?
During a class, you can help as a leader or side walker. Both roles require awareness & empathy to both the rider’s & horse’s mood & ability. The leader is responsible for leading & controlling the horse. The sidewalker walks next to the rider & is there to assure the riders safety & assist as needed – perhaps helping with balance or explaining the teacher’s instructions. At the end of the class the helpers provide feedback on the riders progress. Other jobs on riding days include grooming, tacking-up horses ready for the ride & setting up equipment in the arena.
